Suspense - Tone - Mood - Motif - Romance - Tone (again)
suspenseAn instance of suspense in this book is the fact that in the beginning, the readers don't know anything about Billy Bones and his chest and neither do any of the characters. For the first few chapters as Stevenson is trying to get you into the book, the chest and the man that brought it are a mystery. This is until Pew comes to deliver the Black Spot to him.

motifBlack - The color black plays a big part in this story. From the Black spot to the black flags, the Jolly Rodger to Black Dog, black is a repetitive theme in Treasure island. There are also many scenes in this book that take place during nightfall. Many of Jim’s most frightening encounters with the pirates, such as his finding Billy Bones dead, his creeping near the pirate camp on the island, and his accidental entry among the sleeping pirates in the stockade, occur in the black of the night. Black tends to be a color of death, and it shows that wherever the Pirates go, death follows.
Loneliness - The author of Treasure Island wants to press the fact of Jim;s solidarity into us. He is always alone because he is not like the others. Many of the plot;s devices occur when Jim is alone. For instance, Jim is alone when he meets Pew, the pirate who delivers the black spot that sets the story in motion. The book explores how Jim is maturing and must find confidence and strength on his own as he is growing into a young man. |
